Nobody walks into my rooms asking to look filled. They come in because their skin has stopped bouncing back the way it used to and they cannot quite say when that started.
Usually it is not lines they are describing. It is dullness. Skin that looks tired in a photograph taken in perfectly good light.
What they actually are
Skin boosters are micro injections of hyaluronic acid placed just beneath the surface of the skin.
Hyaluronic acid is something your skin already makes and already holds. Its job is to bind water and your skin produces less of it as you age. The change in texture that follows is one of the earliest things people notice about themselves.
Traditional dermal fillers add volume or reshape contour. Skin boosters do neither. They hydrate the dermis itself and improve the quality of the skin rather than its shape.
What actually changes
Texture improves. Sleep lines soften. The fine lines around the eyes and the mouth settle. Overall brightness lifts.
There is a collagen response over time as well which is why the effect builds across a course of treatments rather than arriving all at once.
This is reasonably well documented. A systematic review of injectable hyaluronic acid and facial skin quality found consistent improvement in hydration and firmness and texture and radiance across different formulations.
Where people forget to look
Hands. They age at the same rate as a face and almost nobody thinks about them until a photograph points it out. Skin boosters work there too and that versatility is part of why I have been recommending them more than anything else lately.
Balance before refinement
This matters more than the treatment itself so it is worth saying plainly.
I look at the profile of a whole face rather than at features in isolation. If the balance of a face is off then refining one feature tends to make that more obvious rather than less. So balance comes first and refinement comes afterwards.
That order is the difference between work that looks like you on a good day and work that announces itself. It is also why a first appointment is a conversation rather than a treatment.
Who it suits
If your skin looks tired rather than lined then this is usually the right place to start. The same applies if you have been thinking about filler but do not actually want your shape changed.
What it will not do is lift or restructure anything. It is not a substitute for sleep or for sun protection and it will not undo the effect of years of neither. Skin quality is also not only a skin question. Dark circles and dullness are often about iron and thyroid and sleep rather than about the skin itself which is why I have written separately about starting an aesthetic consultation with your bloods.
Where to start
The honest answer is that it depends what is bothering you when you look in the mirror and whether the thing bothering you is actually a skin problem.
That is what a first consultation is for. You can read more about natural aesthetics and skin health or book a consultation whenever it suits you.
Good aesthetic work is quiet. Nobody should be able to tell what you have had done. They should only be able to tell that you look like you have been sleeping properly.
